FALDA, Giovanni Battista Alessandro SPECCHI & Giovanni Domenico CAMPAGLIA. Il nuovo teatro delle fabriche, et edicicii in prospettiva di Roma moderna. Rome: [1655]-1739. 5 parts in one volume, 2° (408 x 257mm). Engraved throughout. 5 titles, 5 dedication plates and 162 views. Contemporary Italian mottled calf gilt (neatly rebacked). A fine copy of this important series of views. 'In Italy, up to this time, there had been no extensive and systematic attempt to record Renaissance architecture... Falda was an uneven artist... Nevertheless his work, aside from its historic value, is of special interest in showing the development in Italy of the realistic approach to architectural representation' (Fowler). Dating of sets such as this is difficult: early issues were completed in three books with 90 plates. These were supplemented by Specchi's fourth part in 1699, and completed by Campiglia's final part in 1739. Berlin Kat. 2666; cf. Fowler 78, 116 & 339 (with variant plate count); Olschki 16896.
