Through his studio's window in Fayerweather Hall he observed and composed views of the campus and its surroundings during the change of seasons. Early Snow captures the Massachusetts countryside and reflects the winter light and frigid cold of that particular day. Porter's biographer Justin Spring comments on the artist's depiction of the college at this time: "Amherst's chilly winter...gave Porter new color opportunities in his paintings. He noted in a letter to Giardelli that he had not experienced such prolonged snow, ice, and frigid cold since childhood."
