Fabergé Silver-Mounted Nephrite Dish Workmaster Victor Aarne, St. Petersburg, 1899-1904 The shallow circular carved nephrite dish with coiled snake-form supports. Height 2 1/2 inches (6.4 cm), diameter of dish 4 1/2 inches (11.4 cm). The present lot is one of a number of objects in hardstone and glass fitted with silver snake-form mounts showing the influence of japonisme on Fabergé's production. Another notable example produced in Victor Aarne's workshop is a Tiffany Favrile glass vase with silver snake-form mounts, formerly in the collection of Malcom Forbes and now in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (accession number 2014.698.2). A comparable nephrite dish with silver mounts by workmaster Hjalmar Armfeldt, from the collection of the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, is illustrated in Japonisme: from Falize to Fabergé: the Goldsmith and Japan, Wartski, London (2011), No. 130, pp. 68-69; 74. Another comparable dish is illustrated in A. Kenneth Snowman, Carl Fabergé Goldsmith to the Imperial Court of Russia, London (1979), p. 60. C
In good condition; the interior of the dish with light surface wear from use; one leg slightly loose; another leg with old professional repair (stabilized).; light scratches and minor bruises to silver. The legs are marked (see photos in Internet catalogue).
