F.S. ASHLEY-COOPER
F.S. ASHLEY-COOPER Feats, Facts and Figures of 1904 London: Merrit and Hatcher, 1905. 8vo., blue half cloth, original printed wrappers preserved. Provenance : PRESENTATION COPY TO JAMES CATTON, signed and dated 1905 on limitation leaf -- [H.A. Cohen]. NO. 16 OF 30 COPIES reprinted from Cricket where it appeared in nine parts between 27 October 1904 and 4 May 1905. Ashley-Cooper notes how C. Blythe of Kent delivered his first 12 overs for one run against Sussex at Tunbridge Wells, 11-13 July, 'that being all that was scored from his bowling in one hour'; in the Sussex second innings, Ranjitsinhji nevertheless scored 135 out of 179 in 125 minutes. In the match Notts v. South Africans at Nottingham, August 8-10, "H.A. Cursham made his first appearance for Notts since 1880. On the second day of the match 574 runs were made for ten wickets, the South Africans taking their score from 37 for 0 to 611 all out". Slow scoring gets noticed too. On the last day of a Sussex v. Yorkshire match at Brighton in August, C.B. "Fry gave a very wearying display, taking 2 hours and 20 minutes to add 69 to his overnight score" though obtaining "the personal satisfaction of beating his previous highest score of the season ... by three runs". Wynne-Thomas p. 21; Padwick 920.
