large elephant folio 24 x 19" album bound in black pebbled leather with printed title page A Picture and Word Story of Houston's Celebration in Honor of Howard Hughes, July Thirtieth, 1938 containing over 88 custom printed 7.5 x 9.5" (with two 17 x 22") black and white photographs mounted four to a page documenting the massive Houston celebration held in Hughes'honor on his return from his record breaking round-the-world flight in 1938. Includes 7pps of 22 x 16" photographic reproductions of Houston newspaper articles which covered the event; a 2pp interview of Hughes which appeared in Hughes News, the house organ for the Hughes Tool Co.; 29 images show his arrival at Municipal Airport (now Hobby); 13 images show the ticker tape parade; eighteen images are of the official reception dinner in the Crystal Ballroom at the Rice Hotel. Dignitaries included Governor Alred of Texas, Mayor Fonville of Houston and many Hughes officials; 24 images show Hughes at the gigantic Hughes Tool Co. Hughes is pictured candidly in nearly every image, and undoubtedly, many of these have never been published. An excessively rare album containing superlative images documenting the entire range of activites in Houston. From the estate of long-time Hughes friend and Hughes Tool Co. publicist, J.B. MacDonald.
