Beschreibung:

Lot of 19, including twelve tintypes of unidentified American Indian men, women, and children, ranging in size from 2.5 x 3.125 in. to 3.125 x 4.25 in., taken ca 1880s-1890s. Many of the subjects appear to come from the Plateau area, although this is difficult to confirm based on the lack of identification, and several may be Nez perce. A crisp portrait of a young soldier, possibly American Indian, wearing a kepi that looks to be Civil War vintage is enclosed, as well as five portraits of unknown men, possibly Nez Perce, dressed in either traditional or Anglo-style clothing, including a standing view of an Indian with striped blanket wrapped around his waist as well as an outdoor view of an aged Indian on horseback (poor condition). Five studio portraits of women and children are also included as well as a waist-length portrait of a bearded fellow that may be mixed race or white dressed in formal attire. Two mounted silver gelatin photographs, the first showing Sioux Chief Standing Bear, approx. 4.125 x 5.75 in., on 5.75 x 9 in. mount, uncredited but possibly taken by Louis Bostwick of Omaha, Nebraska. It is believed that the image was likely taken outside Standing Bear's house at White Horse Creek near Manderson, South Dakota, in 1919, by Bostwick. Standing Bear was a respected Lakota artist and leader at Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota. He fought in the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn at the age of 17; and later traveled with Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West Show in Europe (1887, 1890-1891). According to family tradition, the rifle Standing Bear holds in the photograph was purportedly from the Little Bighorn Battle. (See Greasy Grass, Vol. 29, May 2013, p. 31.) Accompanied by 3.75 x 5.5 in. photograph on 5.75 x 8 in. mount of an American Indian, possibly Nez Perce and tentatively identified as "Ellis Kipp," holding what may be a feathered bonnet, standing before a Navajo blanket. With what appears to read "Gibbon / Grangeville" written on mount at lower right. Five loose silver gelatin photographs/real photo postcards of American Indian subjects in traditional dress at camp. All but one photograph is trimmed, and range in size from 3.5 x 4 in. to 3.5 x 5 in. The final photograph, which appears untrimmed, measures 4 x 6 in. and captures an aged chief identified on verso as "Red Cloud," although this identification cannot be confirmed. Provenance:Estate of Dr. WM Bogdanowicz Condition: Tintypes range in condition from near excellent to poor. Some examples are significantly creased and show surface scratching/loss. A more detailed condition report of specific tintypes is available upon request. Chief Standing Bear - photograph with some minor surface abrasions, especially in top right corner of print. Some light staining along perimeter of mount, and remnants of adhesive along lower edges of mount and on verso. Portrait of unidentified American Indian posed before blanket, some minor surface abrasions. Corner/edge wear to mount. Remnants of adhesive on mount verso. Four of five loose silver gelatin photo/real photo postcards have been trimmed down, with cut corners, trimmed edges.
