The "Mona Lisa" is said to captivate its viewer with a mesmerizing eye", National Jeweler Magazine, 1990, Ms. Deborah Catalano, Senior Editor.
"The Malacacheta region produced some of the finest alexandrite in Brazil", GIA Gems & Gemology, Spring, 1988, p.24.
"A superb 18.44 cat's eye alexandrite, one of the world's largest", GIA Gems & Gemology, Spring, 1988, p.25.
"So different and unusual", Paul Desautels, Curator of the Department of Gems and Minerals, at the Smithsonian-National Museum of Natural History
"It's the most impressive gemstone I've ever seen in size, clarity and beauty as a whole," Mr. Jonathan Bruckner, Market Vice-President, Tiffany & Co
Soturno River, Malacacheta, Minas Gerais, Brazil
The Soturno River, a major river in the State of Minas Gerais became known for its alexandrite occurrences during a small rush of mining which transpired from 1975 through 1987. During this period no more than 2 kg of alexandrite were recovered from alluvial workings. Since then, production of gem-quality material has been only a few carats per year. Only one other fine cat's eye is known from this region, and it was sold a few years ago at auction for a record price.
The present exceptional oval cabochon Chrysoberyl var. alexandrite displays an excellent and prominent color-change from greenish-blue to purplish-red--the dramatic color change attributable to trace elements of chromium. The gem is equally notable for its strong and distinct cat's eye effect at the apex of the dome which is a well-centered and pronounced.
Chatoyancy is rarely seen in Chrysoberyl var. Alexandrite. It is an optical effect caused by light reflecting off dense concentrations of parallel needles in a cabochon-cut gem. To obtain the best chatoyancy, the lapidary must cut the base of the cabochon so that it is parallel to the inclusions to produce an even effect across the dome. The present, exceptional cat's eye alexandrite possesses a very high degree of transparency, combined with a very strong color-change effect (90 to 100%), from blue-green when viewed in daylight to reddish-red upon exposure to incandescent light. The combination of high clarity and pronounced color-change effect in a Brazilian cat's-eye alexandrite of this size is a rare and exceptional occurrence. Weighing approximately 18.44 carats and measuring 15.89 x 13.59 x 8.38mm
