Here we are delighted to be able to offer one of the rarest of all the fantastic myriad variations of the legendary Porsche 911 family: the Porsche 911R, chassis ‘004’, offered ‘as found’ and now on the open market for the first time This remarkable survivor has been certified by Jurgen Barth of the Porsche factory in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen as having been one of only four Works cars campaigned by the factory team when new, and it is thought to have been the car which shattered five world speed records at Monza in October 1967, co-driven by the all-Swiss team of Jo Siffert, Rico Steinemann, Dieter Spörry and Charles Vögele. It was sold to Jo Siffert in May 1970 and we understand was one of the fleet of cars which he provided to appear in the celebrated Steve McQueen movie ‘Le Mans’. It appears that the car was painted in Gulf Oil’s famous livery of powder blue and marigold for that appearance. 911R ‘004’ was retained as part of Siffert’s extensive collection after his tragically fatal Formula 1 accident at Brands Hatch, England, in 1971. Its present French owner bought it in 1989 from Swiss collector Gaston Hofer, who had acquired it on 4th January 1979, and since importation to France he has had it maintained but nothing more: it is effectively as it last raced 35 years ago, complete with various minor bodywork modifications carried out, 1967-1971. We understand that the bodyshell has never been crashed nor restored. The engine has been rebuilt by French Porsche specialist Louis Meznarie including fitting new titanium con-rods. There are various faded old racing stickers still on the car including one for ‘Jo Siffert Auto, Fribourg’ and an engine oil change tag dated 15/9/70 at 35,163km. The odometer now reads 46,339km. The tyres are Pirelli, 205/15 at the front and 225/15 at the rear. Well worn lightweight racing seats are fitted, typically trimmed in black leatherette and cloth, and the front wings, doors and bonnet are all fibreglass, with Plexiglas sliding windows. Twin triple barrelled Weber 35mm carbs are fitted to the Typ 90102 engine (960492) and the fuel tank is the large 911R version. Porsche 911R ‘004’ was completed originally in white livery, the standard 911R colour; clients had to inform Porsche if they wanted something different 21 days before collection. Light weight was the cornerstone of 911R – ‘Rennen’, racing – development, and this small group of no more than 16 911R cars provided the foundation of the long line of 911RS and RSR coupés which followed. The 911R shone in such events as the Tour De France, while its Monza records included 10,000 miles at a staggering 130.67mph average… Seules 16 9
