EULER, Leonhard (1707-1783). Vollstndige Anleitung zur Algebra. St. Petersburg: Imperial Academy of Science, 1770. 2 volumes, 8 o (223 x 159 mm). Woodcut title vignettes. Contemporary marbled boards, uncut (cloth rebacking, paper spine labels renewed). Provenance: JOSEPH-LOUIS LAGRANGE (1736-1813), mathematician who wrote the foundation work on analytical mechanics, Mchanique analytique , which was an extension of Newton's work on mechanics (presentation inscription inside both front covers: "Pour Monsieur le Directeur de La Grange Berlin par Son trs-humble et trs-obessant serviteur L. Euler," probably in the hand of an amanuensis, as Euler had become almost completely blind in 1766); E.W. Mybs (gift inscription from G. Brock in 19th-century hand inside rear covers); Wilhelm Voss (bookplates). FIRST EDITION IN GERMAN. INSCRIBED TO THE GREAT FRENCH MATHEMATICIAN JOSEPH-LOUIS LAGRANGE and probably used by Lagrange to prepare his French edition of 1794. In the preface to his Vollstndige Anleitung zur Algebra Euler explains that subsequent to his blindness, he had the idea, to dictate this work to his valet, in order to write a text book on algebra, easily understood by everyone. The work contains among other things the theory of cubic and biquadratic equations. It first appeared in a Russian translation at St. Petersburg in 1768-69 and was followed by numerous editions in French, English, Italian and Dutch. Euler's work was of great influence on 19th- and 20th-century texts on algebra. Lagrange was deeply influenced by Euler's work, and his Mchanique analytique (see lot 580) improved the calculus of variations developed by Euler and the Bernoullis by appyling to it Euler's methods of analysis. A SUPERB ASSOCIATION COPY. Norman 735. (2)
