Jh., one of the oddest and most beautiful books of the whole century (McLean), gedruckt in nur 1000 Exemplaren, mit reich ornamentierten, typisch viktorianischen Zierinitialen von Mary Byfield, die in einem spannungsvollen Kontrast zu den modernen, fast schon konstruktivistisch anmutenden Farbdiagrammen stehen. Byrnes wegweisende Idee bestand darin, den Schülern das Erlernen der euklidischen Geometrie durch den Einsatz von Farben für die Diagramme zu erleichtern. Im Vorwort schreibt er: Among the Greeks, in ancient, as in the school of Pestalozzi and others in recent times, geometry was adopted as the best gymnastic of the mind ... the use of coloured symbols, signs, and diagrams in the linear arts and sciences, renders the process of reasoning more precise.... - Wie stets papierbedingt durchgehend etwas braunfleckig, ansonsten gutes Exemplar des seltenen Werkes. (somewhat rubbed and stained, spine with cover defects) First and only edition. - One of the strangest textbooks of the 19th century, one of the oddest and most beautiful books of the whole century (McLean), printed in only 1000 copies, with richly ornamented, typically Victorian ornamental initials by Mary Byfield, which contrast excitingly with the modern, almost constructivist-looking colour diagrams. Byrne's pioneering idea was to make it easier for pupils to learn Euclidean geometry by using colours for the diagrams. In the preface he writes: Among the Greeks, in ancient, as in the school of Pestalozzi and others in recent times, geometry was adopted as the best gymnastic of the mind... the use of coloured symbols, signs, and diagrams in the linear arts and sciences, renders the process of reasoning more precise.... - As usual due to paper somewhat brownstained throughout, otherwise a good copy of this rare and delicate work.
