Oil on canvas, 49.3 x 65.1 cm Provenance: Private collection, The Netherlands N.B.: Eugène Galien Laloue became known for his work at an early age. He painted numerous views of Paris during autumn and winter, depicting the prosperous and elegant Paris of the belle époque. Due to the restraints of this contract Galien-Laloue had to assume several pseudonyms to enable him to work freely, for example under the name of A Michel. Under these pseudonyms he painted the summer landscapes of Normandy and Seine-et-Marne, the later hotbed of the Barbizon School. In 1874 he started work as an illustrator for the French railways and depicted the railway lines between Paris and the surrounding provinces. The Republic of France appointed Galien-Laloue war artist, after which he completed several historically important works.
