Ink and watercolor on laid paper, 11 1/2 x 8 5/8 in. (29.3 x 22.0 cm), framed. Condition: Fading, rippling, not examined out of frame. N.B. Eugene Berman was the designer for the Metropolitan Opera's production of Rigoletto which opened November 15, 1951. This production marked Berman's debut with the company. In the review in the New York Times, Olin Downes wrote, "The production of Verdi's 'Rigoletto' last night in the Metropolitan Opera House, with new scenery and costumes by Eugene Berman and stage direction by Herbert Graf, was one of the most interesting and exciting interpretations of this work that we have seen."
