Benjamin Shurtleff was born in Plympton, Massachusetts; married Sally Shaw, born in 1845 in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in July 1803, and died in Boston in 1845. Note: Ethan Allen Greenwood was born in Hubbardstown, Massachusetts, in 1779 and began painting about 1801. During the ensuing eleven years, he attended Dartmouth College, studying law and teaching school. In 1806, he received instruction in New York City from Edward Savage In 1812, he opened a painting studio in Boston, where he painted many portraits. After 1827, he returned to Hubbardstown, where he lived until his death.
