Ethan Allen Greenwood (Massachusetts 1779-1856), Pair of Portraits of Sally Shurtleff and her Husband Dr. Benjamin Shurtleff (3d) (1774-1845) of Boston, 1813, Signed "Greenwood pinxt 1813." Oil on wood panels. (a) A young blue-eyed woman wearing a lace mob cap and a V-neck olive green dress embellished with an organza ruff is seated in a chair gazing at the viewer, unframed. Condition: unrestored; minor paint losses and warping, sight ht. 27 1/2, wd. 21 in. (b) The young man wearing an olive green waistcoat and vest highlighted by a white high-standing collar, unframed. Condition: unrestored, some paint loss and warping. sight ht. 27 3/4, wd. 21 1/4 in. Provenance: Family descent to the consignor. Benjamin Shurtleff was born in Plympton, Massachusetts; married Sally Shaw, born in 1845 in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in July 1803, and died in Boston in 1845. Note: Ethan Allen Greenwood was born in Hubbardstown, Massachusetts, in 1779 and began painting about 1801. During the ensuing eleven years, he attended Dartmouth College, studying law and teaching school. In 1806, he received instruction in New York City from Edward Savage In 1812, he opened a painting studio in Boston, where he painted many portraits. After 1827, he returned to Hubbardstown, where he lived until his death.
