'This is a most interesting work, not only because of the many plates, which illustrate sites in Greece, Smyrna, the Holy Land and Egypt, and the detailed account Estourmel gives of his travels, but also because of the many contacts he had with travellers on the way' (Blackmer). The penultimate chapter describes the author's stay in Malta. The second edition (1848) was published without plates.
