ESTIENNE, CHARLES. La dissection des parties du corps humain diuisée en trois liures...avec les figures & declaratio[n] des incisions, composées par Estienne de la Riviere Chirurgien. Paris: Simon de Colines 1546. Folio, 372 x 246mm. (14 5/8 x 9 11/16in.), calf, spine gilt, covers dampstained at edges, the staining affecting some margins at front and back, a few edge repairs, Z6 torn and repaired, slight worming to lower blank margins in the last 150 leaves, occasional small stains. FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH, 64 full-page woodcut anatomical illustrations by Etienne de la Riviere and Jean Jollat (including six repeats), 101 small text woodcuts, criblé initials in three sizes, Coline's "Tempus" device [Renouard, Colines , no. 1] on title-page, with the final blank leaf, ruled in red throughout. First published in Latin by Colines in 1545, this edition in French contains two additional full-page woodcuts, on A6r and A7r. The famous series of illustrations, though not as accurate as those of Vesalius, includes the first depictions of the external venous and nervous systems. It is thought that some of the male figures are based on designs by Giovanni Battista Rosso made from disinterred bodies from a burial ground at Borgo. Some of the anatomy is diseased. Adams S1726; Garrison and Morton 378; Harvard/Mortimer French 213; NLM/Durling 1392. Provenance : Juan Carlos Ahumada, bookplate; the present owner.
