Madrid: La Imprenta Real, 1809. Five parts in two volumes, 4 o (233 x 178 mm). Five engraved folding plates at end of vol. II. Contemporary Spanish tree calf, smooth spine gilt (very lightly rubbed). A VERY FINE, FRESH COPY FIRST EDITION OF THIS SCARCE ACCOUNT OF THE MALASPINA EXPEDITION. Espinosa was the cartographer working under Vicente Tofiño de San Miguel at the observatory in Cádiz. In 1787 he and three other young officers inspired by the great circumnavigations drew up plans for a Spanish scientific voyage. Though his proposals were rejected in favor of those of Alessandro Malaspina, Espinosa was asked to accompany the expedition. He missed the start of the voyage due to ill health but joined Malaspina in Acapulco after traveling overland across Mexico. Upon returning from the expedition in 1794, Espinosa was made aide-de-camp of Admiral José de Mazarredo and in 1797 he was appointed director of the Hydrographic Office of Madrid. He was secretary to the Council of the Admiralty until 1808 when he resigned offices, refusing to recognize Bonaparte's authority. He fled to Seville and then England where he could continue his cartographic work. In 1815, he returned to Spain to resume his directorship of the Hydrographic Office, only to die a few months later. The Memorias includes THE FIRST PUBLISHED REPORT OF THE MALASPINA EXPEDITION TO THE ATLANTIC AND PACIFIC. Seeking to summarize all of the reports of Spanish seamen of the late eighteenth century and thus synthesize some of the best navigational information of the age, Espinosa details numerous expeditions in the Pacific, reports the discovery of new islands and provides information about the mapping of the Philippines. For the Malaspina expedition, which visited Port Jackson in Australia only five years after its settlement, and made an important voyage up the coast from California to Alaska, Espinosa details scientific aspects of the voyage and a general account of the places visited. Early reports of the Malaspina voyage are few and scarce: Francisco Javier de Viana's account was not published until 1849 in Montevideo, Uruguay in a very small edition (see lot 516) and the official account was not published until 1885 (see lot 340). According to American Book Prices Current , the present copy is the only copy to appear at auction in at least 30 years, when it was last sold at Sotheby's London, 4 December 1997. Howes E-185; Howgego E36; Palau 82851; Sabin 22905. Not in Hill. (2)
