ERWIN STOLZ* (Kyselka 1896 - 1987 Wien) Jüngling mit Schwan Tusche und Bleistift/Papier, 21,5 x 17 cm Provenienz: Nachlass des Künstlers, Privatbesitz Wien SCHÄTZPREIS: °€ 800 - 1.500 Österreichischer Maler und Grafiker des 20. Jahrhunderts. Kam nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg als Autodidakt zur Malerei, als Schildermaler und Industriegrafiker. Pflegte Kontakte zu Gustav Kurt Beck Erich Mallina George Kenner, Alexander Rothaug und den Künstlern des Hagenbundes. Befreundet mit Josef Matthiaus Hauser aus dem Umfeld von Arnold Schönberg. Stilistisch dem Jugendstil und Symbolismus zuzuordnen, Interesse an Mystik, Mythologie und Theosophie. Deutliche Einflüsse von Max Klinger und Gustav Klimt Schuf mystische Szenen und märchenhafte Motive, Darstellungen von Mensch und Natur im Einklang, männliche Akte und Tierdarstellungen wie Jüngling mit Schwan. Besonders eindrucks- und wirkungsvoll sind auch die vorliegenden Tuschfederzeichnungen, in denen Stolz das Kolorit zur Gänze zugunsten einer radikalen Schwarzweiß-Ästhetik ablegt. Die Blätter zeichnen sich durch ihren ornamental-dekorativen Reiz und ihre mystisch-symbolistische Tiefe aus. Der Gedanke drängt sich auf, der Künstler habe sich in der Gestaltung dieser Werkgruppe mit scheinbar narrativem Charakter, in der es um einen als nackten Jüngling aufgefassten Bogenschützen und einen Schwan in einer traumartig fremden arkadischen Landschaft geht, von einem Stoff der Sagenwelt oder der Mythologie inspirieren lassen. Der Jüngling , der gerade den Schwan erlegt hat, nähert sich seinem Opfer mit kapriziös erhobenem linken Unterarm in nahezu zaghafter Anmut. Möglicherweise bereut er seine Tat, ähnlich dem Seemann in Samuel Taylor Coleridges „Rime of the Ancient Mariner“, der den Albatros zur Strecke gebracht hat. Der sterbende oder bereits tote Schwan hebt anklagend seinen rechten Flügel und weist damit in die Höhe, aus der er herabgestürzt ist, und über das irdische Dasein hinaus. Die hohen, schlanken Bäume im Hintergrund folgen dieser Aufwärtsbewegung.

Started painting after World War I as a self-taught sign painter and industrial graphic artist. Maintained contacts with Gustav Kurt Beck Erich Mallina George Kenner, Alexander Rothaug and the artists of the Hagenbund. He was friends with Josef Matthiaus Hauser from the circle of Arnold Schönberg. Stylistically to be assigned to Art Nouveau and Symbolism, interest in mysticism, mythology and theosophy. Clear influences of Max Klinger and Gustav Klimt Created mystical scenes and fairy-tale motifs, depictions of man and nature in harmony, male nudes and animal depictions such as young man with swan. The present pen and ink drawings are particularly impressive and effective, in which Stolz completely discarded the coloring in favor of a radical black-and-white aesthetic. The leaves are characterized by their ornamental-decorative appeal and their mystical-symbolic depth. The thought arises that the artist was inspired by material from the world of legends or mythology in the design of this group of works with an apparently narrative character, which deals with an archer conceived as a naked youth and a swan in a dreamlike, strange Arcadian landscape. The youth, who has just killed the swan, approaches his victim with a capriciously raised left forearm with almost timid grace. He may have regrets, like the sailor who hunted down the albatross in Samuel Taylor Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner. The dying or already dead swan raises its right wing accusingly and thus points to the height from which it fell and beyond earthly existence. The tall, slender trees in the background follow this upward movement.
