Beschreibung:

ENORMOUS ILLUMINATED INITIAL "O", cut from a leaf of a MANUSCRIPT ANTIPHONAL ON VELLUM [Spain, Valencia or Toledo, circa 1500] 264x239mm, fawn patterned with a lush surround of blue, orange and white scrolling leaves, stems and flowers on a raised burnished gold ground, infilled with a large strapwork interlace and coloured scrolling leaves. (Patches of blue leaves lightly rubbed). Fragment of two lines of music in square notation on two red 5-line staves Mr. Lionel Lambourne has kindly informed us, that another two initials from the same manuscript are in the Victoria and Albert Museum. One, also an "O" with a Pelican in her Piety in place of the strapwork ornament in the present initial, is described by E.F. Strange, Catalogue of the miniatures, leaves and cuttings from illuminated manuscripts in the V & A (1923) p.93 and plate 25, the other unpublished is a letter "M" (D287--1892). Another, but historiated initial possibly from the same manuscript was sold at Sotheby's 22 June 1993 lot 43. Our initial has an erased ownership stamp 'Studio of ??' on verso. The development of such initials in Valencia is discussed by A.V.Davallos, La Miniatura Valenciana en los siglos xiv y xv (1964), referring particularly to the Liber Hymnorum in the Valencia Cathedral Archive (figs.89-90) and the Valentino Missal in the Archivio Castalan 94 (figs.112-113)
