Wonderful view of the ship Great Western, as she departed from Bristol, England to New York on her maiden voyage, flying both the British and the American flags to commemorate the establishment of steam navigation between Great Britain and America, and the establishment of the Great Western Steamship Company. The Great Western made about ninety Atlantic voyages during her eight years of service. The legends in the lower margin provide the ships statistics and the names of the company founders. Joseph Walter Pinx., Bristol. No date, but the voyage itself commenced in July of 1838. There was a print by published by Ackermann, London 1840, but this one is not identified as such, ands retains larger margins. Lot Amendments Condition: The hand coloring is bright, but the attractive engraved text in the legend is somewhat faded. Laid down on cardboard, as removed from a frame. The borders are clean with no tears, foxing or staining. Very good. Item number: 242042
