(Some staining.) 19th-century paper-backed boards. Second editon. Conforming to the page count described by the Huntington for the preliminaries, with the exception that the present copy has the Epilogue leaf bound at front, as occasionally (i.e. Yale copy). Wing S-2844. -- LEE, Nathaniel (ca 1653-1692). Sophonisba: or, Hannibal's Overthrow. A Tragedy. London: Printed for R. Bentley, [date and portion of imprint torn away]. 4 o (220 x 157 mm). With additional title to the third edition [London: for Sam. Brisco, 1691, Wing L-873] bound at front. Modern blue boards (bowed). Later edition. This is presumably one of two later editions printed for R. Bentley, either in 1691 or 1693. The first edition was printed for J. Magnes and R. Bentley in 1676. See Wing L-874 and L-874A. -- MALLET, David (ca 1705-1765) and James THOMSON (1700-1748). Alfred: A Masque . London: Printed for A. Millar, 1751. 8 o (225 x 143 mm). Half-title. (Some pale staining.) Stabbed-and-sewn as issued, uncut; brown quarter morocco folding case. Second edition, after the first of 1740, which contained the first appearance of "Rule Britannia." Rothschild 1362. Provenance of all : Donald and Mary Hyde (bookplates). -- MASSINGER, Philip (1583-1640). The Emperour of the East. A Tragae-Comoedie. The Scaene Constantinople. As it hath bene divers times acted, at the Black-friers, and Globe Play-houses, by the Kings Majesties Servants . London: Printed by Thomas Harper, 1632. 4 o (178 x 129 mm). (Title soiled and with inner margin renewed, I4 with repaired tears crossing 7 lines of text, some light soiling.) 19th-century brown half morocco (joints a bit weak). Provenance : Beverly Chew (bookplate); Henry E. Huntington (pencil duplicate note on rear flyleaf); John L. Clawson (bookplate; sold Anderson Galleries, 21 May 1926, lot 515); Donald and Mary Hyde (bookplate). FIRST EDITION. After first being performed at the Black-friars as a comedy, this play was altered for performance at the Globe and at Court as a tragi-comedy, presumably due to its poor initial reception.
