Lot of 7. The Swamp Root Almanac and Weather Forecasts for 1921 is representative of that genre of privately published advertising (usually patent medicines) almanac, this one for Dr. Kilmer's Swamp-Root, good for kidney, bladder, liver. Binghamton (NY): Dr. Kilmer & Co. 12mo, color illustrated wraps with Indians and Buffalo, and zodiac, 32pp plus inner covers. Hostetter's Illustrated United States Almanac for 1900 is similar. Pittsburgh (PA): The Hostetter Company. 12mo, printed paper wraps, 36pp. This one is for Hostetter's Stomach Bitters. His opening advertisement hits the nail on the head: The majority of mankind know comparatively little, and care less, about the abstruse theories, the recondite principles, the ingenious hypotheses, and the learned jargon of medical science. But PAIN RELIEVED, DISEASE OVERCOME, are patent and convincing results of which they take eager cognizance. The almanac contains the usual testimonies of efficacy, and claims that the bitters will protect against changes in climate, "rouse a dormant liver," lessen the infirmities of age, treat malaria, rheumatism and gout, increase vigor, settle nerves, stimulate the kidneys, treat indigestion, and overall increase health!! Backus, Charles K., compiler. The Michigan Almanac. Detroit: The Advertiser and Tribune Company, 1870. 12mo, 79pp, plus 8pp ads. This one sold advertising space for many different companies (eyeglasses, stationery, dry goods, insurance, etc.), providing a snapshot of later 19th century Michigan. Simmonite, W.J. The Meteorologist; or a Daily Account of the Weather and a Complete Almanack for 1839 - 1843. London: J. Limbird and A. Whitaker. 16mo, contemp. calf, 36, 48, 48, [possibly some pp missing], 52, 24, 56pp. MacDonnel, D.E. A Dictionary of Quotations, in Most Frequent Use. London: Printed for Geo. B. Wittaker, 1826. 16mo, full leather, 423pp. The Illustrated Pronouncing Pocket Dictionary of the English Language on the Basis of Webster, Worcester, Walker, Johnson, Etc. London: Williams Collins, Sons, and Company, 1873. 24mo, embossed cloth, tape repair to spine, 318pp. Prevost, Rev. F. and Blagdon, F.W. The Spectator, in Miniature. Exeter: J. & B. Williams, 1839, vols. 1 & II bound together. Narrow 32mo, full leather, 318 and 301pp. Provenance: Property from the Collection of Dr. Fred E. Schwab
