An Empire musical sewing box in satinwood, having a hinged lid with serpentine edges and two bands of metal tacks surrounding a top-mounted, ring handle, the mirrored interior fitted with a removable, velvet-lined tray containing a variety of sewing implements including a needle, a thimble, scissors, a mother-of-pearl pin holder, two mother-of-pearl buttons, a glass essence bottle, and a pair of Civil War cap buttons converted into earrings, the bottom of the box housing the music mechanism below a removable, glass cover, all rising on brass feet, PLUS a dome-top, wooden box, the exterior and interior covered in hand-painted paper depicting birds perched on floral branches, having a top-mounted wire handle and a hook clasp, PLUS a mother-of-pearl card case; sewing box ht. 3.5, wd. 7.75, dp. 5.5 in. Provenance: Descended in the Turner Family of Newport, RI Condition: Sewing box lid with minor chips at corners. Missing one tack from lid. Retains key to music mechanism.
