ELLIOT, Daniel Giraud (1835-1915). A Monograph of the Tetraoninae, or, Family of the Grouse . New York: the author, 1865.
ELLIOT, Daniel Giraud (1835-1915). A Monograph of the Tetraoninae, or, Family of the Grouse . New York: the author, 1865. 2° (580 x 455 mm.). One-page subscriber's list. 27 hand-coloured lithographic plates by C.F. Tholey and [?]others after Elliot, Joseph Wolf (1) and William S. Morgan (2), printed by Bowen & Co. of Philadelphia. (Some light offsetting and spotting, occasional marking, one plate trimmed, tears to inner margins of 2 plates and 2 text leaves.) 19th-century green half morocco gilt, spine gilt in compartments, lettered in one, others with simple repeat pattern in gilt, top edge gilt (boards a little rubbed and scuffed, rebacked, corners repaired). Provenance : traces of bookplates on upper pastedown. 'NEXT ONLY TO AUDUBON'S, THE ELLIOT WORKS ARE THE MOST VALUABLE AMERICAN BIRD PLATES' (Bennett). This is Elliot's second major work and was first issued in five parts in 1864-65 and then as a bound volume in 1865. The lithographic work was done by Bowen & Co. -- the printers of the plates for the octavo edition of Audubon's Birds of America and possibly the best colour-printers in the United States at the time -- and the 25 bird plates were after Elliot and Joseph Wolf with William S. Morgan supplying the drawings for the two plates of eggs. This is one of only three works by Elliot produced in the United States; all of his later works were printed in Europe, although sometimes retaining a New York imprint. Anker 128; Bennett, p.39; Fine Bird Books p.95; Nissen IVB 293; Wood p. 331; Zimmer p. 205.
