ELIZABETH I (Queen of England, 1558-1603)]. PRIVY COUNCIL document, a warrant signed by Sir Robert Cecil, George Lord Hunsden, Sir William Knollys, Sir John Fortescue, Roger Lord North and Lord Buckhurst to Lord Burghley as Lord Treasurer, Greenwich, 29 June 1598, for the payment of £2000 'to prepare and putt in readines an other proportion of victuall to serve 4000 men for two months' in Ireland, endorsed and signed by Burghley at foot, giving instructions for the payment, one page, folio , integral blank leaf, address panel (some wear at margins, centrefold repaired with modern tape, seal tear repaired with tape on verso, touching letters in three words on three lines). The sum ordered comes as a supplement to £8000 already issued for the victualling of troops in Ireland a mere fortnight previously, and indicates the gravity of the situation in Ireland after the Earl of Tyrone's renewal of his rebellion on 7 June, on the expiry of a truce; at the time of this letter Tyrone was engaged in laying siege to the crucial fort on the river Blackwater. The troops referred to in the present letter may have composed part of the relief force led by Sir Henry Bagenal which was all but annihilated by Tyrone on 14 August at Beal-an-athabuidhe, an event which represented the high water mark of the rebellion.
