ELIZABETH I (Queen of England, 1553 - 1603). Initial letter portrait of the Queen on an Inspeximus Charter, an exemplification of a licence of alienation between William Woodhouse Knight, Elizabeth Woodhouse, his wife, and Thomas Barrington, John Turner and others, referring to manors and property in Norfolk, Westminster, 24 May 1563 . Manuscript on vellum, one membrane, 450 x 710mm , folded back at foot, 39 lines written in brown ink in a Chancery hand, in Latin, the portrait (approximately 170 x 85mm) in brown ink showing the Queen enthroned under a canopy within a strapwork initial letter 'E', the first line in engrossed majuscules, the upper margin illuminated with flowers and heraldic beasts in brown ink (slightly soiled in upper margin) with an impression of the Exchequer seal in brown wax (defective, 2 fragments missing). Sir William and Lady Woodhouse held estates from the Crown in Norfolk. He appears in documents as a royal servant, and was later created a vice-admiral by Elizabeth.
