Title: Eleven stereoviews of California Missions - from the private library of Harry Claude Peterson Author: Watkins, Carleton E. [and] Edward J. Muybridge Place: San Francisco Publisher: Date: c.1870s Description: Includes: 7 from Watkins' New Series: Mission San Luis Obispo (written in ink over "San Antonio de Padua"). * 2 views of Mission San Juan Capistrano. * 2 views of Mission San Gabriel. * Mission San Luis Obispo (another view). * Mission San Miguel. * 4 different views of the Mission of Santa Barbara from Muybridge's The Missions of California. All but one stereoview is rubber-stamped on verso with the stamp from the private library of H.C. Peterson. Harry Claude Peterson (1876-1941) was raised in Palo Alto, California. Peterson was active in the historical and curatorial community in Palo Alto, serving as the Director and Curator of the Stanford University Museum of Fine Arts from 1899-1918. While director he wrote numerous historical papers, amassed his own personal collection of historical items, and served on the Palo Alto city council for eight years. He also held other important positions in the field, working as head of Field Research for the California History Department of the California State library, a California history writer for the Oakland Tribune, Curator of Sutter's Fort Museum in Sacramento, serving on the Southern Pacific Railroad Company's selection committee to identify historical sites along its lines, acting as historical consultant for motion pictures, and becoming a charter member of the American Association of Museums. During his lifetime he published hundreds of stories and speeches and countless photographs. His series of articles on the Gold Rush, written for the Oakland Tribune, were collected and published by Doubleday. Lot Amendments Condition: Light wear from handling; very good.
