Referring to Amasis, ruler of the 26th Dynasty, this fragment is a precious testament to the decorative arrangement of Egyptian funerary reliefs. The left part of this fragment pictures the god Horus as a falcon, atop of a serekh symbolizing the royal palace. Engraved on this serekh is one of the five names given to Egyptian pharaohs: the Horus name. Transcribed, Amasis's Horus name means "the one who establishes the truth." On the left side of the falcon, two overlaid hieroglyphs refer to Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt thus establishing Amasis as the ruler of both kingdoms. The right part of this fragment shows Apis's hieroglyph followed by a duck hieroglyph referring to Hep, a duck known for his procreative powers. The whole piece is placed under the protection of a sparrow hawk or falcon, whose wide-open wings are visible in the upper part of the fragment. In his claws, he holds the sign shen that stands for wholeness for some, or ten million for others. The nature of this fragment and its return to the Old Kingdom Egyptian style - considered as the pinnacle of Egyptian artistic work- make it fall within what has been called the "Saite Renaissance".
