Author: Taylor, Bayard Place: New York Publisher: George P. Putnam Date: 1854 Description: 2 volumes bound in one. [iii]-xii, 251, [1]; [5]-247 pp. 7½x4¾, original grained cloth, spine gilt. Fourth Edition. A successful author and correspondent with the New York Tribune, Bayard Taylor went to California specifically to record the Gold Rush. The Zamorano Eighty notes that "This work by an eminent writer and artist is probably the outstanding book on the early gold rush in California..." This copy with early inscription and rubberstamp of George H. Spencer, Jr. of the Minnesota Territory. Lot Amendments Condition: Light wear to extremities; minor spots to first few leaves, apparently lacking half-title and preliminaries to vol. 2 (but possibly as issued); near fine.
