EISENHOWER, Dwight. Typed letter signed ("D. E."), as President, to William Ewing, Washington, 17 May 1958. 1 page, 4to, White House stationery . Fine. EISENHOWER REACTS TO VICE PRESIDENT NIXON'S LATIN AMERICAN ORDEAL A fine Presidential TLS from Ike, commenting about the near assassination of Nixon and his wife Pat in the streets of Caracas, Venezuela. "I am concerned, as I know you are, by the unfortunate incidents that marred Dick's return trip, but such episodes--unpleasant for him and Pat as they were--cannot tarnish the friendships that I believe firmly exist between the peoples of all the American countries..." Nixon's "goodwill tour" through South America turned vicious when he hit Venezuela and became the target for years of pent up rage at the U. S. for its support of the recently deposed, oil-friendly dictator, Marcos Perez Jiminez. From the moment Nixon and his wife exited the plane on 13 May--and had to walk across an open tarmac--large, angry crowds jeered, cursed and spit at them. Cars strafed his limo on the highway as it headed toward an official ceremony at the tomb of Simón Bolívar Then, on narrow streets in the city center, mobs overwhelmed the small National Guard detachment and surrounded the vehicle, hurling soccer ball sized chunks of concrete at the bullet proof glass--which gave way--sending splinters flying into the face of Nixon, his wife, the Venezuelan Foreign Minister, and translator, Gen. Vernon Walters. The mob started to rock the car until Secret Service men, guns drawn, cleared an escape path. American officials later learned that Communist protestors, armed with Molotov cocktails, waited on the road leading to the Bolívar tomb. They were certainly intent on taking Nixon's life, but the Vice-President wisely ordered the limo to the American embassy compound, where he stayed until it was safe to leave the country, this time under heavily armed military guard. Nixon left a memorable account of this attack in Six Crises .
