"I AM JUST AS FOND OF DOGS AS YOU ARE" GRIEVING PARENTS, SOLDIERS' PETS, AND STRAIGHTENING OUT THE OFFICERS CORPS. This interesting group of war-date letters show the range of emotional and not just military problems that Eisenhower had to address as Supreme Commander. There were heartbreaking notes from anxious parents and spouses: "I am indeed distressed to get your note and to learn that your son is missing in action...I sincerely hope we will be able to give you some good news" (to Mr. Willis, 12 Feb. 1945); "I...truly understand your desire to have your husband home..." (to Mrs. Cunnignham, 21 Sep. 1945). Ordinary Pfc.'s and Non-commissioned officers brought their problems to him as well: "I am, indeed, distressed to learn that you have recently lost your father and fully understand your desire to obtain an emergency furlough..." (to Cpl. Meyers, 21 Sep. 1945); "Unfortunately, I cannot give you a firm promise to get your dog home...I am just as fond of dogs as you are..." (to Staff Sgt. Wertheim, 8 Aug. 1945). The 28 April 1945 letter to Bedell Smith shows Ike eager to weed out the unfit from the capable officers as peacetime demobilization approaches: "...You will forward to me personally your recommendation, in the case of each...officer, as to whether he should be retained in his present grade, be promoted or be demoted..."
