Lot of 8. One with authentic Field inscription and signature, the other 7 probably Field-Sickles forgeries. Field, Eugene. The Holy Cross and other Tales. Cambridge: Stone& Kimball, 1893. 16mo, blue trade cloth with gilt front, back and spine, and top page edges, 191pp. Inscribed on ffep To dearest Julia, With all my love. Eugene Field. Dec. 11, 1893. Field, Eugene. Florence Bardsley's Story. Chicago: W. Irving Way, 1897. 16mo, grey paper boards, No. 39 of 150 on Dutch hand-made paper. Provenance statement on rear fep, This book was presented by the publisher to my mother for the library of my father Eugene Field. Eugene Field II, Sept. 1, 1924. Almost impossible to verify, but it does have an authentic Field bookplate. Duprat, C. The Book Lover's Almanac for 1895. New York: Duprat & Co., 1894. 16mo, patterned soft cover. Contains a Field poem, so this is a copy to the author, inscribed to Field and signed by Duprat on ffep. Opposite tp notes that 400 copies on Van Gelder paper with "No." but no number noted. Signature on bottom of p33 at the end of Field's poem probably a Field-Sickles forgery. Eugene Field died late in 1895. He was probably alive to sign it, but unclear why he would have in his own copy. Riley, James Whitcomb. Old Fashioned Roses. London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1888. 16mo, blue cloth with gilt spine lettering, 145pp. With Riley's bookplate and Yours truly - James Whitcomb Riley on ffep. Eugene Field identification above Riley's signature probably a Field-Sickles forgery. Anon. "chapbook" William the Sailor. London: Hodgson, n.d. 16mo, with hand-colored illustrations on all 8 pp, unusual for this type of book. Bound in half-leather boards with marbled paper and marbled endpapers, gilt on spine and top page edges; 34 blank leaves added for binding purposes. Eugene Field. London, 1890 on ffep, suspicious. Probably a Field-Sickles addition. Anon. "chapbook" Francis and Mary. The Dangers of the Deep;... London: Hodgson, n.d. Small 24mo, 4.25" tall, half-leather with marbled paper and marbled paper boards, gilt spine and top page edges, fold-out hand-colored frontis and 16 text pp (unnumb); 24 blank leaves added for binding. This also has suspicious Eugene Field. London, 1890 on ffep. Probably a Field-Sickles addition. Maidment, James (ed.) Bibliotheca Curiosa. A New Book of Old Ballads. Edinburgh: Privately printed, 1885. 16mo, limited printing, but not numbered; half-leather with marbled paper boards and endpapers, 57pp. Eugene Field, 1/2 olive green Mor.. London, August 25th, 1890. in pencil on half-title. Butts is suspicious of this one since the bookplate is the Field-Sickles reproduction. Watson, William. The Eloping Angels: A Caprice. New York: MacMillan and Co., 1893. 16mo, blue cloth boards, gilt front and spine. 29 numbered pp, end page and 2 pp ads. Field signature and date on ffep probably Field-Sickles forgery, as is bookplate. Condition: Most are in acceptable condition. Overall, expected wear, but very little toning except of the cheaply-printed chapbooks. Second is worn with head of spine coming loose and some loss to foot of spine. Internally clean. Almanac has wear to cover. Riley has sunning of spine, shelfwear. Watson shows wear to spine ends. Small chapbook shows hinge wear. "William" shows spine wear and corner bumping.
