Publisher's half leatherette, all edges gilt. 17 1/8 x 12 1/5 inches (43.5 x 31.5 cm); lithographed half-title leaf with mounted albumen, printed title and plate list, with a total of 36 albumen prints on card mounts (printed with tiitles etc. and dated 1857) with protective tissues, each plate with accompanying text. Some wear to the front board, rear board stained and warped, gutta percha perished and disbound, some damp-staining to the gutter margin, generally clear of the images, but worse towards the end of the book and touching the last two images. The tones of the majority of the prints are generally very strong. Frith travelled under conditions of considerable hardship, carrying a 16 x 20 inch plate camera and processing the plates in an unventilated tent.
