Egypt and Sudan Medals 1882-1891 from the Collection of Jack Webb A rare Sudan D.C.M. group of six awarded to Conductor Samuel Reid Commissariat and Transport Corps, later Captain, Kitchener’s Fighting Scouts, for gallantry at Hasheen in March 1885 Distinguished Conduct Medal, V.R. (Condr. S. Reid, C & T. C. 20th March 1886) note incorrect year; South Africa 1877-79, 1 clasp, 1879 (Condr. S. Reid, Commissariat Dept.); Egypt & Sudan 1882-89, 2 clasps, Tel-el-Kebir, Suakin 1885 (C of Sups. S. Reid, 12th Co. C & T. C.); Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 3 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Johannesburg (Capt. S. Reid, K.F. Scouts) renamed; King’s South Africa 1901-02, 2 clasps, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 (Capt. & Qr.-Mr. S. Reid, Imp. Yeo.); Khedive’s Star 1882, the first five mounted on a contemporary wearing bar, the last on a separate pin, together with companion set of 6 miniature medals, contact marks, otherwise very fine or better (12) £3500-4500 Footnote D.C.M. recommendation submitted to the Queen 10 March 1887 (GO 148/87). Awarded, without Annuity or Gratuity, ‘in recognition of his gallant conduct during the action at Hasheen in the Soudan on the 20th March 1885’. The Boer War medal roll for Kitchener’s Fighting Scouts notes that Reid’s medal was “earned as 14966 C/Sgt., 28 Coy. I.Y.” and it was probably originally issued to him named in that manner. Samuel Reid was born in Fulham, Middlesex, on 8 November 1846. He served in the Zulu war, and in Egypt and the Sudan as a Conductor of Supplies in the Commissariat and Transport Corps, and was commissioned as Quartermaster and Hon. Lieutenant in the Army Service Corps on 3 October 1888. He retired in August 1898, but volunteered for service with the 28th (Bedfordshire) Company, Imperial Yeomanry, on 6 January 1900. He was discharged from the Imperial Yeomanry in December 1900, in consequence of joining Kitchener’s Fighting Scouts. Sold with copy I.Y. discharge papers which confirm all medals and clasps except the K.S.A.
