EDWIN A. ERICKSON Born September 22, 1918 in Martinsburg, West Virginia, Edwin A. Erickson attended Johns Hopkins University where he studied marine engineering. Following World War II, where he assisted the U.S. Navy's ship building efforts, he began what would become his life-long career as a safety engineer. During an extended assignment for the U.S. Government in Okinawa, he developed a great respect for the Japanese people and their culture, especially swords. Mr. Erickson was a discerning collector and accomplished polisher of Japanese swords for over forty years. He was a founding member of the Japanese Sword Society of the United States and a member of the N.B.T.H.K., in addition to numerous societies and clubs throughout the United States. Ed Erickson was the father of eleven children and died in a plane crash at the age of 71 on August 27, 1989. PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE LATE EDWIN A. Jihada : itame . Hamon : narrow suguba in nioi with scattered ko-ashi . Boshi : komaru (indistinct). Nakago keitai : slender, strongly tapering, in all probability ubu and with a moist, brown patina; yasurime : indistinct; nakagojiri : ha-agari kuri-jiri ; mekugi-ana : two; mei, tachi-mei: Yoshimune . Uchigatana koshirae : roiro saya ; iron Choshu tsuba carved with a mountainous landscape with gold highlights, silver mimi , signed Choshu (no) ju Tomohisa saku , height 7.0 cm.; black-wrapped tsuka with silver, gold and shakudo menuki ; shakudo nanako Mino Goto style fuchi-kashira applied in gold with insects, brush fences and autumn flowers, unsigned, early 19th century. Storage bag. Accompanied by an origame by Hakusui Inami
