First Edition, Third Issue. Important work capturing the marvels of the Calaveras Grove by one of the most accomplished of early California artists. For this third issue in enlarged format the views on plates II and VIII are entirely redrawn. Edward Vischer (1809-1878), a native of Bavaria, settled in California about 1847. He established himself in San Francisco, principally as a commission merchant. Late in life he took up drawing and was soon making sketches wherever he went. Vischer's early work was reproduced by lithography, and is esteemed for for its quality and appeal. For his later work he had his drawings photographed and mounted the prints on cards or in albums. The present volume is Farquhar's state A, in a cloth portfolio rather than a pictorial paper envelope. In the envelope issue was a four-page folded sheet with text. The text was reduced and edited and mounted on the inside rear cover of the cloth issue. Present with this copy is a photocopy facsimile of the four pages that were issued with the envelope issue.
