EDWARD SEAGO (british 1910-1974) "THE THAMES AT RICHMOND" Signed 'Edward Seago' bottom left; also inscribed with title verso, oil on board 27 1/2 x 37 3/8 in. (69.9 x 94.9 cm) provenance: Richard Green, London. The Estate of Andre and Nancy Brewster, Maryland. note: Hailing from the County of Norfolk in Norwich, Edward Seago was not only a hugely popular painter in both oils and watercolors, he was also an accomplished illustrator and writer. Largely self-taught, Seago's colorful biography includes an early stint in Bevin's Travelling Circus, resulting in the production of circus-themed artworks and two circus-themed books: Circus Company , written in 1933, and Sons of Sawdust , written one year later. Seago served as a camouflage officer during World War II, and was later a member of the Royal Engineers, during which time he painted scenes of the Italian campaign at the request of Field Marshal Alexander It was with the Royal Engineers that he met a number of important people, including George VI, Churchill, and Macmillan. Seago in fact travelled in numerous prominent social circles, leading directly to his receiving patronage from such notable figures as Henry Mond, Second Lord Melchett. His extensive journeys outside his native Norwich permitted him to paint scenes of Paris, Venice, Morocco, Holland, Portugal and Hong Kong, as well as many other distant locales. Still, it is his British landscapes for which Seago is arguably best known and admired, and today he is seen as an important painter who helped to carry forth the tradition of Norwich School painting into the 20th century. Seago's realistically rendered landscapes have generally been described as being atmospheric, spontaneous, and impressionist in execution. A testament to his popularity and skill include his appointment as an official Coronation artist, his always sold out multi-year annual exhibitions at the prestigious Colnaghi Gallery from the years of 1945 to 1967, as well as the continual sales and eventually gifts of his paintings to the late Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.
