Edward D. Movitz (American, 20th/21st Century) Blue Moon and Evening Star Signed and dated "Movitz 1985" l.r., artist, title, and date inscribed on the reverse. Watercolor and gouache on paper, sight size 29 1/4 x 18 3/4 in. (74.3 x 47.6 cm), framed. Condition: Not examined out of frame. N.B. Skinner is proud to present to work of two fine contemporary artists who have been inspired by the sea and light of Vinalhaven, Maine. (Lots 542-555) The art colony on Vinalhaven, Maine has been attracting artists for decades. Located fifteen miles off of the coast of Maine, this island and fishing community in the middle of Penobscot Bay possesses unparalleled natural beauty and spectacular views. Vinalhaven offers artists a visually rich environment through the juxtaposition of the serenity of an island and tranquility of quiet harbors with the activity of its lively fishing industry and the ruggedness of the rocky shorelines. Artists such as Marsden Hartley Raphael Soyer and Robert Indiana have been attracted to the island because of its surrounding waters; the ocean waters present an eternal source of visual inspiration from the forceful waves of powerful hurricanes to the subtle reflections of light in calm seas. "Vinalhaven remains a continual inspiration offering an environment which supports and nourishes the creative spirit" -Edward and Daveda Movitz Edward Movitz is a Professor Emeritus at Massachusetts College of Art. He obtained an M.A. in Education at Harvard University. In addition to creating gouache and oil paintings, Edward works in drawings, monoprints, and woodcuts. Over the course of his career, his work has grown increasing personal and his style has evolved from representationalism to symbolic abstraction. He has exhibited extensively throughout New England, including the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University and the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University. Daveda Movitz works in watercolors, ceramics, gouache and oil. After receiving her M.A. in Fine Art from Boston University, she has worked as an artist and has developed an abstract impressionist style to create increasingly emotive works. Her work has been featured in one person and group shows in the northeast including the Brooklyn Art Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Daveda has also worked as a teacher. Married since 1952, Edward and Daveda Movitz met while attending high school art classes through the Museum of Fine Arts Scholarship program. Edward and Daveda have summered in Vinalhaven since 1977.
