Walter], 1764-84. 6 volumes (including supplement), large 2° (530 x 350mm). Letterpress indices and subscribers lists in vols. 5 and supplement, otherwise engraved throughout. 6 titles by Pranker and Bartolozzi after Cipriani, 6 dedications, 278 coats-of-arms including 3 double-page and 7 hand-coloured heightened with gilt and silver, and 366 family trees including 23 folding and 74 double-page. (Occasional spotting or offsetting, gilt slightly rubbed on a few hand-coloured plates.) Contemporary calf (worn). Provenance : Heneage Finch, 4 t h Earl of Aylesford (1751-1812; bookplates; by descent to:) -- Heneage Finch, 7 t h Earl of Aylesford (1849-1885; sale of Aylesford's library in our rooms, 8 March, 1888, lot 646, £œ5 to:) -- The Right Hon. Richard Read Dobell, Beauvoir Manor, Quebec and Ennismore Gardens, London (booklabel). LARGE-PAPER COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, formely belonging to the 4 t h Earl of Aylesford, MP and Lord Steward of the Household, friend of Horace Walpole collector of Rembrandt's etchings, and Trustee of the British Museum for 25 years. 'As a book of general reference, one of great utility [with] arms finely engraved' (Lowndes). Among those skilfully hand-coloured in gold and silver, Viscount Wentworth's arms are particularly noticeable (first plate of vol. 3). The plates are complete according to the numbering sequence, but their number appears to vary from copy to copy.
