EDEN UPTON EDDIS (BRITISH 1812-1901)PORTRAIT OF THE HON. MRS HELY-HUTCHINSON, NÉE WRIGHTSON AND HER YOUNGEST DAUGHTER, LATER LADY WORSLEY Oil on canvas 92 x 71.5cm (36 x 28 in.) Literature:F. Sitwell, Weston Hall, Towcester, Northamptonshire: A Brief Guide, Northampton, 1993, p. 6, on the Main Stairs.Catalogue Note:This portrait shows Mrs. Harriet Hely-Hutchinson (née Wrightson of Cusworth Hall, Yorkshire, 1788-1864) with her youngest daughter, Marianne Christiana Isabella Hely-Hutchinson (1833-93). Harriet inherited Weston Hall through her unmarried aunt Mary Heber in 1809. In 1825, she married Colonel the Hon. Henry Hely-Hutchinson (1790-1834), brother of the 3rd Earl of Donoughmore, and professional solider - her first marriage to the Hon. Frederick North Douglas, MP for Banbury, son of Sylvester Douglas, Baron Glenbervie of Kincardine, had been cut short when the groom tragically died within three months. The Colonel was a womanizer, in receipt of love tokens from the notorious Pauline Borghese, Napoleon's sister, and the great love of his life Countess Sidonie Potocka, granddaughter of the Prince de Ligne. With the Colonel, Harriet had five daughters, and the family lived at Weston Hall. Weston Hall passed to the Sitwell family by way of Harriet Frances (d. 1911), the oldest daughter of the Colonel and Harriet, who married Wyndham Hanmer to become Lady Hanmer. She left Weston to her nephew, Sir George Sitwell (1860-1943), for the benefit of his younger son, Sacheverell (1897-1988). Marianne married Sir Arthington Worsley, 2nd Bt., in 1860.
