Acquis par Walter Bornheim (1888-1971) de la galerie munichoise 'Für Alte Kunst' pour le Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring (1893-1946), Paris, 10 septembre 1941 (pour 120 000 fr.) (archives : MAE carton 581 R 36 et BAK B 323 562) ; Hermann Göring (inv. RM 1065) (archives : BAK B 323 61), Allemagne.
Mis à l'abri à Berchtesgaden, Bavière lors de la débâcle allemande (inv. 87) ; puis transporté au Munich Central Collecting Point (MCCP inv. 5125), 25 juillet 1945.
Rapatrié vers la France par le sixième convoi en provenance de Munich à destination du siège de la commission de récupération artistique, 18 avril 1946 ; puis retenu lors de la quatrième Commission de récupération artistique (CRA), France, 21 décembre 1949.
Attribué par l'Office des Biens et Intérêts Privés (OBIP) au musée du Louvre, Paris, en 1950.
Déposé au musée Granet, Aix-en-Provence, en 1953 ; dépôt annulé, février 1956.

NEAPOLITAN SCHOOL MID-17TH CENTURY, THREE-QUARTER LENGTH PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN, FORMERLY KNOWN AS THE 'PORTRAIT OF MADAME DE LONGUEVILLE' AND 'PRESUMED PORTRAIT OF MADAME DE LONGUEVILLE', OIL ON CANVAS, WITHOUT FRAME
The present portrait comes from the collection of Gabrielle Philippson (1880-1941) (fig. 1). Gabrielle was heiress to a Belgian banking family who were prominent members of the Jewish community in Brussels. Living in Paris at 62, rue Charon at the time of the Nazi Occupation and turmoil of World War II, her apartment housed a collection of decorative arts and Old Master paintings which included works attributed to Rubens (1577-1640), Fragonard (1732-1806), and other significant artists. This Neapolitan school portrait, though, left the collection through a forced sale just months prior to Gabrielle’s death, secured for Hermann Göring’s (1893-1946) residence in Carinhall. Later, almost the entirety of her apartment was emptied in 1942 by the Nazi art looting organization, the Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg (ERR).
In the ensuing war years, the portrait came to be housed in Berchtesgaden, the town near Adolf Hitler’s (1889-1945) mountaintop retreat, where many of the highest-ranking Nazi leaders had homes. In July 1945, the Portrait was transported to the Munich Central Collecting Point, after having been recovered by the Allied Monuments Men. The Munich Central Collecting Point, housed in what had been Hitler’s so-called Führerbau, was the centre where the Monuments Men examined and inventoried newly-recovered works, with the ultimate aim of returning them to the countries in which they had been looted or sold under duress. The portrait was repatriated to France in 1946 and later entrusted to the Louvre Museum for safekeeping until its owner could be identified. While in the post-war years her family were successful in having restituted to them some artworks and furniture that had been taken from Gabrielle or her estate, the portrait remained unrecovered.
Due to the efforts of the Ministry of Culture, the Louvre Museum, and the Commission for the Compensation of Victims of Spoliation (CIVS), the Neapolitan school portrait was restituted in February 2022. Christie’s is privileged to offer this work on behalf of the heirs of Gabrielle Philippson’s daughter, Stéphanie Goldschmidt.Special notice
