Beschreibung:

Eastern Kufic bifolium, from a Seljuk Qur'an, in Arabic, with interlinear translation in Farsi, illuminated manuscript on paper [Seljuk Persia, c. 1170 AD] single bifolium, containing text from surah al-Baqarah (2:230-2:240), single column, 14 lines striking black eastern kufic, with interlinear translation to Farsi in a rounded black naskh, diacritics and vocalisation in red and green, 2 ornamental devices to the margins, verses marked with gold roundels throughout, some repairs over text in gauze, margins and gutter repaired, some scuffs and chips with slight loss to ink, each leaf c. 360 by 250 mm. These leaves are important relics of the twelfth-century Seljuk Dynasty in Persia, copied in the highly stylised and recognisable eastern kufic script specific to that region and period, probably for a royal patron. A bifolium from a notably similar Qur'an (but of 12 lines) was sold in Sotheby's, 9 April 2014, lot 16, for £7,500.
