[Early Printing] [Livy] Historiarum ab urbe condita, Paris,1516, edited, printed, and published by Jodocus Badius Ascensius Philip Melanchthon copy T.Liuij Patauini historici clarissimi que extant decades ad decem diuersa exempla acri iudicio reposutae... (Paris): Venundantur ab Jodoco Badio Ascensio, (1516). Folio. [40], CCLXXX leaves; pi8, aa-dd8, a-z8, A-M8, colophon on M8. Title-page in red and black with printer's device, decorative border partly colored in red, and woodcut initials. With an old ink Latin annotation on the front free endpaper recto, 'Hic liber olin Melanchthonis fuit ' (This book once belonged to [Philip] Melanchthon). From the library of Georg Kloss M.D. and with his book-plate on front paste-down (Georgius Klosz), and with the later ownership signature of Benj(amin). F. Stead, dated 1838, on same. Old annotations on title-page; numerous manuscript interlineations and marginal notation throughout entire volume [see below for the attribution of these to Melanchthon]. Old three-quarter vellum over marbled boards (ca. 1700), covers and corners heavily worn, vellum spine starting; edges stained red; small worm holes, slightly affecting a few words; scattered minor soiling and foxing; occasional light creasing; top corner of front free endpaper excised. OCLC 38712280; not recorded by USTC or Adams. Georg (Franz Burkhard) Kloss' library was sold at auction by Sotheby and Son in 1835. The Catalogue of the Library of Dr. Kloss, of Frankfort…including many original and unpublished manuscripts, and printed books with MS. annotations, by Philip Melancthon… described the above volume, lot 2606, as 'Melanchthon's copy, with numerous interlineations and marginal notes.' Provenance: by familial descent from Benjamin Stead. . Philip Melanchthon (1497-1560), was a German reformer and the first systematic theologian of the Protestant Reformation. He stands next to Martin Luther and John Calvin as a molder of Protestantism.
