Beschreibung:

2 vols. [3], xii, 318 pp.; [3], 410 pp. (8vo), contemporary brown quarter calf, marbled paper boards, leather labels, gilt rules and lettering. Half-titles present. Third Edition; the first edition was published in 1835, also by Gosselin. An interesting and early novel about slavery in America written by Alexis de Tocqueville’s traveling companion, Gustave Auguste de Beaumont (1802-1866) and based on their tour of the Southern states in 1831-32. The plot involves a Frenchman who falls in love with an American woman of mixed blood and his subsequent attempts to see slavery first hand by touring the States. He eventually marries his love, but they are hounded and chased into the wilderness, where she dies just after learning that her brother was killed in Georgia while participating in an uprising of Indians and Blacks. Though Marie went through several editions in French, it was not translated into English until 1956. Sabin 4188; Clark, Travels in the Old South, 13, who list subsequent editions.
