An interesting and early novel about slavery in America written by Alexis de Tocqueville’s traveling companion, Gustave Auguste de Beaumont (1802-1866) and based on their tour of the Southern states in 1831-32. The plot involves a Frenchman who falls in love with an American woman of mixed blood and his subsequent attempts to see slavery first hand by touring the States. He eventually marries his love, but they are hounded and chased into the wilderness, where she dies just after learning that her brother was killed in Georgia while participating in an uprising of Indians and Blacks.
