Etched title vignette, 11 etched plates, one double-page, and 55 etched head- and tailpieces and illustrations by and after Dunoyer de Segonzac [printed by Vernant], additional suite of the etchings printed on single sheets. (Occasional light spotting, heavier on the suite.) Loose as issued, contained in 2 original card chemises lettered in brown and black on the upper covers, original vellum-covered chemise lettered in gilt on the spine (vellum a little marked, short cracks on joints, lacking slipcase). Philippe's novel Bubu de Montparnasse was originally published in 1901 and describes the Parisian demi-monde and particularly prostitution. Dunoyer de Segonzac was introduced to the bibliophile society 'Les XXX' by his friend the engraver and printer Daragnès, and was commissioned to illustrate a book for them; his choice was Bubu and he eventually engraved at least 165 images (of which 67 were used in the book) between 1927 and 1928, to 'revivre le calvaire de ces filles de Sébasto, et l'atmosphère grise, humble et douloureuse qui enveloppe le livre de Charles-Louis Philippe' (Dunoyer de Segonzac 'Pourquoi j'ai choisi Bubu', in: Lioré and Cailler, p.27). 'Segonzac, cet habitué des bars mondaines des Champs-Élysées, visite maintenant ceux moins élégants mais plus pittoresques, dont les clients s'accoudent sur le "zinc", les bals où se danse le java aux sons de l'accordéon et les rues que hantent les passantes équivoques. Partout il emporte ses cuivres aves lui, et grave comme un autre prendrait des croquis sur son carnet de dessins. Il a même ses petites entrées dans les hôpitaux, grâce à des amis médecins [...] En même temps, l'artiste déployait à son aise son remarquable et vigoureux talent de portraitiste, car tous ses personnages sont des portraits. C'est de cette interpétation directe, executée "sur le tas" que l'illustration de Bubu par Segonzac tient tout son accent et ce frémissement qui est celui même de la vie. Les tailles et contre-tailles, vives et rapides, sont réduites à l'essentiel' (Lioré and Cailler pp.10-11). The Percy Turner that this copy is inscribed to is possibly the art historian Percy Moore Turner, author of The Appreciation of Painting (London: 1921), The Catalogue of a Centenary Memorial Exhibition of John Constable R.A.
