An exquisite maki-e fountain pen depicting a bird in flight over ferns. #3 lever filled, 1920s. Black lacquer ground, together with gold, red, green, brown and silver hiramakie. The pen is signed by maki-e master Shucho (see inset illustration). This pen is not referenced in Hutt & Overbury's "Alfred Dunhill: The Art of Lacquer Pens" (Ontario: 2000), nor in any other known references, and appears to be rather uncommon. Pen shows signs of use, including light wear to maki-e work, but no significant damage. High-point brassing to goldfilled trim. No packaging or paperwork. Bonhams is grateful to Mr. Stephen Overbury for contributing his expertise in identifying the artist and vintage of this pen.
