It is "one of the great sea atlases of all time, magnificently engraved, and may be justly regarded as the encyclopedia of knowledge regarding the sea" (DSB II, 214). The fine maps show the coasts of the Americas, Africa, Europe, many locations in the Far East, and Norway. While Phillips gives a full list of maps and pagination, the plates, in the first volume create some confusion. They are numbered: 1-3, [unnumbered], 4-8, [83], [85], [8.e.26], 9-24, 26, 27 (151.e.154). The plates in this copy have most of the numbering altered by a contemporary hand. Phillips I:203-16.
