DUDLEY, Dud (1599-1684). Metallum Martis: or, Iron made with Pit-coale, Sea-coale, &c. And with the same Fuell to Melt Fine Imperfect Mettals, and Refine perfect Mettals . London: T.M. for the author, 1665. 8 o (142 x 90 mm). Woodcut folding plan (defective), also present in facsimile. (Title-page and errata leaf lined on verso, stained and browned throghout.) Modern calf antique. Provenance : F. Cartwright, Dudley 1775 (inscription on B1v and possibly his corrections throughout, mostly following the errata). In the preface to his 1854 reprint of Dudley's handbook, John Bagnall (see below) undoubtedly refers to this copy when he describes the copy used for the reprint as having belonged to Cornelius Cartwright of Dudley (and lacking half the map at end). EXCEEDINGLY RARE FIRST EDITION of this treatise on the use of raw coal in place of charcoal in iron production. As forest supplies diminished with the expansion of the iron industry in England, atttempts had been made to substitute mineral coal for charcoal in iron production as early as the beginning of the 17th century. In his Metallum martis , Dud Dudley claimed success in this operation, but he refrained from revealing his method. His successful claims must "in the absence of confirmatory evidence, be regarded with scepticism" (Wolf). Partington II, pp. 60-61; Singer, Technology IV, p. 99; Wing D-2438; Wolf I, p. 542; Norman 663. [ With :] DUDLEY, Dud. Dud Dudley's Mettallum Martis - John ROVENSON. A Treatise of Metallica - Simon STURTEVANT. Metallica, or The Treatise of Metallica . London: T. Simpson for Hamilton, Adams, & Co., [1854]. 4 o (212 x 161 mm). Folding genealogical table as frontispiece and lithographed plate in first work. Original beige cloth (soiled). The second reprint of Dudley's treatise also includes reprints of works by Sturtevant and Rovenson, originally published 1612 and 1613, respectively. Norman 664. (2)
