DU FOUILLOUX, Jacques (1521?-1580). La Venerie... avec plusieurs receptes & remedes pour guerir les chiens de diverses maladies. Plus l'Adolescence de l'Autheur . Poitiers: the brothers de Marnef and Bouchet, n.d. [ca 1566].
DU FOUILLOUX, Jacques (1521?-1580). La Venerie... avec plusieurs receptes & remedes pour guerir les chiens de diverses maladies. Plus l'Adolescence de l'Autheur . Poitiers: the brothers de Marnef and Bouchet, n.d. [ca 1566]. 4 o (226 x 158 mm). Full-page woodcut on title verso of the author presenting his book to the king, 56 woodcuts of hunting scenes (including one repeat) of which 3 are full-page; woodcut initials, printed music. (Some very minor marginal browning, a few minor marginal chips, one repaired with a little discoloration.) 18th-century mottled calf gilt (rebacked). Provenance : Alfred Barmore Maclay (bookplate); acquired from Herbert Reichner, 1962. VERY RARE THIRD EDITION, and the penultimate Poitiers edition and the last to be printed in italic type. The woodcuts are those of the previous two editions. The importance of Du Fouilloux's La venerie can hardly be overstated. It was the first major work on the subject since Gaston Phébus' Livre de chasse , written in the late 14th century, and it remained pre-eminent for two hundred years. Thiébaud dates this edition to 1566 or 1567 based on the dedication in Jean de Franchière's La Fauconnerie which refers to this undated edition. Du Fouilloux lived during the reign of Charles IX, to whom the Venerie is dedicated. The book caused a great stir among sixteenth-century huntsmen, and the numerous editions attest to its popularity. The fine woodcuts in this edition are the same as in the first (1561), beginning with hunting dogs types and illustrating methods of hunting deer, wild boar, and other animals. Mortimer notes the effective use of solid black areas with details in white in a block of a dog (A8v) and two blocks of boars (M1r and M4v). RARE. Mortimer French 188; Schwerdt I, 152; Thiébaud 296.
