A collection of about 45 items including models, letters, and photographs, relating to Dr. Glenn P. Wilson. Starting in the 1950s, Dr. Wilson was a leading staff member on the Senate Committee on Aeronautical and Space Sciences which was chaired by then Senator Lyndon Johnson. Dr. Wilson advised leading Senate members on the course of the US space program and studied the competitive actions undertaken by the Soviet Union. He later worked for NASA Headquarters in Washington D.C., between 1978 and 1982. Comprising: 1. A metal model of the Telstar Satellite, 2½ inches in diameter on a 6 inch oval wood base with plaque that reads: "Dr. Glenn Wilson, Witnessed First Telstar Transmission, July 10, 1962, Washington, D.C." 2. A plastic model of the Syncom satellite, 4 inches in diameter on a 5½ inch square black lucite base with a plaque that reads: "SYNCOM, First Synchronous Orbit Communications Satellite, Built by the Hughes Aircraft Company for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Launched from Cape Canaveral – 9:33 am July 26, 1963. Dr. G. P. Wilson." The model has internal radio (currently inoperative). 3. A plastic model of the Vanguard Satellite, 4 inches in diameter on a 9 inch square wood base with a large plaque that reads: "VANGUARD." 4. 22 black and white photographs, 8 by 10 inches, of satellites and launch vehicles including Vanguard, Telestar, Redstone, Juno, and Atlas. 5. 12 color photolithographs, 8 by 10 inches, from the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs. 6. "Atomic Energy Legislation Through 86th Congress, 1st Edition." 247 pp. A review of atomic energy as of December 1959. 7. "Project Telstar." Bell System. 20 pp. Illustrated description of world's first privately funded communications satellite. 8. "Apollo 204 Accident, Report of the Committee on Aeronautical and Space Sciences, United States Senate." 20 pp. A summary of the events causing the loss of the Apollo 1 crew. 9. "United States Aeronautics and Space Activities 1968." 116 pp. A summary report issued to Congress by the President of the United States. 10. "NASA International Programs." 49 pp. A January 1970 summary of joint NASA space activities. 11. A 1974 membership roster for the National Space Club of Washington, D.C. 78 pp. 12. Two letters to Dr. Wilson: from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1961 relating to papers on science and public policy; from NASA Headquarters in 1971 relating to a joint Department of Transportation and NASA development policy study.
