DOYLE, Arthur Conan, Sir]. RATHBONE, Basil (1892-1967), Actor . Photograph inscribed and signed ("Basil Rathbone"), n.p., n.d. [c. 1940]. 10 x 8 in. , framed, unexamined out of frame . A fine black and white image of the handsome actor staring directly into the camera, chin resting on his hands. Rathbone's left hand is supported by a book, while the right holds a cigarette. The actor has inscribed the photo to "Miss Edith." Rathbone, a great character actor, was widely praised for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in a series of movies produced in the 1940s. -- GILLETTE, William (1853-1937), Actor . Photograph inscribed and signed ("William Gillette"), n.p., 16 January 1936. 10 x 8 in. , framed, unexamined out of frame . A fine black and white image of the aged actor neatly inscribed in the lower left corner "To Edward S. Hipp With greeting & good wishes William Gillette Jan. 16, 1936." Gillette has neatly erased an area of the photograph, removing a portion of his black suit, and has written the inscription in the erased area. On a separate piece of paper below the inscription, someone has written in a different hand "How's that for an idea?" Gillette is well-known for playing the lead in Sherlock Holmes -- A Drama in Four Acts , a play which he had personally rewritten from the Doyle originals. The play remained on stage for 33 years. Gillette's portrayal of Holmes wearing a deerstalker cap and smoking a calabash pipe established those props as a permanent part of the popular Holmes' image. Together 2 items . (2)
